B Dreyer placed 9th overall and K Dreyer 41st overall in the Mpumalanga Open. After the competition B Dreyer was invited to participate in the SA Bisley to be held in Bloemfontein

D Smith and S Wormington attended the SA Closed Squash Tournament during the holidays.

S Wormington finished 7th in the U16 age group.

D Smith placed 5th in the U19 section and was selected to represent South Africa at the All Africa Junior Championships in Zimbabwe. At the conclusion of this tournament he was ranked 7th in Africa in the U19 age Group.

Anastassios Kostakis participated at the National Level 2 Swimming
Championship and achieved the following medals:

Bronze Medal – 50m Breastroke
Bronze Medal – 400m Freestyle Relay and 200m Freestyle Relay
Silver Medal – 200m Medley Relay

Martin Binedell, Juan-Claude Fitchat, Mark Hunter and Travis Smith
qualified and competed in the National Level 3 Swimming
Championship.

Martin managed 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals for his events and Mark
Earned 1 silver and 1 bronze in his events. The 4 boys also achieved a
silver medal in the Open Category Medley Relay.

A number of College Canoeists took part in the SA Slalom Champs over the weekend.

D Wewege won overall, M Starr was 2nd Junior and 4th overall and L Hattingh was 1st U16.

Martin Binedell competed in the SA National Open Water Championship 2012 at
Albert Falls this weekend and won a Gold Medal in the 3 Km event for boys 14- 18
and third overall in the Open event.

He also competed in the Golden Mile this weekend and achieved a Gold in the Open
Men's category. and the Triathlon Ocean Swim Double Mile Open event where he
earned third place.


During the holidays, P Zondi and N Manchev were selected for the KZN U17 and U15 teams respectively. At the end of the Interprovincial Tournament played in Pretoria, Manchev was selected for the SA Schools team.

Martin Binedell competed at the Telkom SA National Aquatic Champs and
Olympic Trials last week and has done exceptionally well by making semi finals
and finals in the back stroke events.

 

His best performance was an amazing 2.03:78 in the 200 m back stroke event,
equalizing the SA Age Group record (set by Carl Crous in 2007) , earning him a
Gold for Youth Elite (under 19 years of age) and a spot in the Open men final where he also swam well to end up 5th overall. He was also selected to swim in the open 4 x 200 m free style relay where they managed to win a Silver medal.

 At the Traditional 10 School Gala held at the Ellis Park Pool in Johannesburg, College placed 6th.

Week 4

M Masondo, B Smith, S Buthelezi, J Conradie, J Wewege, B Tyrer, S Stuart, R Vermaak, J Kriel, L Sibiya and M Khanyile represented the Pietermaritzburg and Districts Invitation Athletics team at the annual Menlo Park Invitation meeting held at Menlo Park, Pretoria. The other schools that competed were Menlo Park, Ermelo, Nelspruit, Klerksdorp, Eldoraigne and Monument. All these schools are known as top Athletics schools, so there was some tough competition!

J Kriel ran a true gutsy College boy's race in the U14 800m and was rewarded with a first place in a time of
2: 15,6s! L Sibiya came third in the U16 High Jump with a height of 1,79m. R Vermaak came 3rd in the U15 200m

This weekend, 16th –18th March, the first round of the
International UCI Mountainbike World Cup series comes
to Cascades, Pietermaritzburg. Two College 6th formers,
Sam Bull and Kyle Davids, as well as Alasdair Fey
(matric 2011) will be competing in the Downhill event.

Their qualifying race takes place on Friday 16th with the
top 80 riders moving on to the final on Sunday.

This is a great spectator event and we wish the boys the
best of luck.

The Maritzburg College Canoeing Club participated in the 10 lap Enduro held at Blue Lagoon on Saturday. This was the final event of the inter-schools canoeing season and saw approximately fifty four-man teams competing in a relay format in Durban. The College u18a team of D. Wewege, M. Dundas-Starr, J. Speed and M. Haw led from start to finish, winning by a comfortable margin over the next schools team which was the College u16a crew of L. Hattingh, A. Woodgate, D. Stamp and D. Spies.
The event was followed by the final prize giving ceremony of the season: D. Wewege was announced as the u18 Victor Ludorum and L. Hattingh the u16 Victor Ludorum - a commendable performance considering these boys both have another year in their respective age groups. College were also announced as the inter-schools champions for 2011 for the sixth consecutive year, comfortably ahead of second placed Michaelhouse.

Maritzburg College participated in the annual St John's College Sun City Tournament.
The College golf team was comprised of the four leading players of 2011, namely Sheldon Stroebel, Niel Swanepoel, Zehan Pelzer and Malcolm Mitchell.


The tournament is played over the two championships layouts, namely, The Lost City and Sun City courses.
The team started off very well at the Lost City Course and after day one, the team was in 4th position, dropping to 8th on day 2, 12th on day three and finally finishing the tournament in 10th place earning themselves a gold medal.


This was the fourth year of playing in this tournament and the golfers may be proud of their achievement of being the top kwaZulu-Natal school.
