The Khanyisa education outreach programme has been running at Maritzburg College since 2009, and aims to help teachers and learners from under-resourced schools in the greater Pietermaritzburg area improve their understanding, skills and enjoyment of maths and physical science.
The programme has suitably been named “Khanyisa” which means to “light up” or to “enlighten”. It is run by Maritzburg College educators and top academic learners, who serve as peer tutors. With support from the local Department of Education, 20 schools have become involved in the programme, which benefits 25 teachers and some 120 learners.
Teachers attend 4 hour mathematics and physical science sessions every eighth school day at Maritzburg College. These teachers are provided with subject notes, worksheets and tests, as well as lunch packs and transport money. More importantly, they are taught good teaching skills and strategies that work in the classroom – through this, their confidence to teach these subjects is significantly enhanced.
The learner programme comprises of 4 sessions per term. Learners from participating schools are also provided with learning materials, stationery, bus fare and lunch. Six sessions per subject per term are held on Saturday mornings.
One learner, when asked to comment on his experience with Khanyisa, responded as follows:
“ … I can learn, but teach too. Because I am teaching the other learners at my school … they can understand sometimes, but then some do not understand. So, then I must start again and think to find another way to say it. And I think it is the teaching that has made me to understand even better and I am so happy that I will do well, but it makes me more happy even that I can help some other people who did not come to Khanyisa.”
The 2016 NSC results of the 20 participating schools have clearly shown the positive impact of the Khanyisa programme, with significant improvements in both maths and science results.
Over the years, various sponsors have supported the programme, including RMB, Nedbank, the Department of Education and Rotary, although we are currently looking for new funders to help the programme continue its good work.
