There are currently three choirs at Maritzburg College:

SCHOOL CHOIR:   Teacher in charge: Ms Mary-Ann Hartley. Choir leader 2013: Sphe Nzuza.

CHAMBER CHOIR: Teacher in charge: Ms Mary-Ann Hartley. Choir leader 2013: Brandon Loelly.

GOSPEL CHOIR:  Teacher in charge: Mr Skhumbuzo Ngcobo. Choir leader 2013 :Dux Myaka.

CHOIR EVENTS.


These include school events such as Prizegiving, Matric Speech Day, Sports and Cultural Awards, Easter Service, Carol Service, Lunch-hour Concerts, and Evenings of Music. Choir members also participate in the school's musical productions, the last being 'My AfriKan Dream'(2011). Many are in the cast of the 2013 musical production, ‘Born this way,’ which opens on the 3rd May.


The choirs also perform regularly at events outside the school such as Symphony in the City and the Last Night of the Proms with the KZNPO, Concert in the Park, Hilton Arts Festival, Giants Castle Choir Competition, visits to retirement homes eg Marian Villa Home for the Aged, and to Hospice to entertain the patients

KZN Midlands Youth Choir.


Maritzburg College boys are selected every year to be part of the prestigious KZN Midlands Youth Choir. There are currently fourteen boys in the present Youth Choir, which went on tour in 2012 to England and Wales where they performed in a concert which was part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. They came second in the Youth Choir category of the International Eisteddfod held in Llangollen in Wales, and third in the Show Choir category.

VOCAL GROUPS.


Small ensembles perform regularly at events both in and out of the school. There is currently a Septet, Quartet and a Quintet who sing a range of songs by artists such as Michael Buble, Billy Joel Cee Lo Green,Moses Hogan, Ennio Morricone  South African group 'The Soil' and 'The New York Singers'. Performances include school events such as Prizegiving, SpeechDay, Evenings of Music, Lunch-hour Concerts etc, the Hilton Arts Festival, Concert in the Park, Maritzburg Marathon, City Hall concerts and many of the  Maritzburg College150th  anniversary celebrations.


MUSIC LESSONS.


Maritzburg College has 5 independent teachers teaching in the afternoons after school to accommodate boys who wish to learn musical instruments. There are boys who take music as a matric subject even though we do not have a Music department. They register with the school and study the curriculum with their private teachers.
