Stats/Highlights from the previous year:
In 1985 the first CANSA Relay for Life took place. Relay for Life is an international event that is taking South Africa by storm and is spreading throughout the country due to its popularity as a wonderful community-based volunteer-driven event honouring cancer survivors.

Relay for Life is an overnight community event that enables individual communities to get involved in the fight against cancer. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the 12-18 hour relay that includes luminaria and survivors’ lap of honour. Relay teams of 10-15 people walk on a pre marked track in support of CANSA. The relay takes place at night to highlight the fact that Cancer never sleeps.

Teams raise funds before and during the event and these funds are channelled towards CANSA services in that community. CANSA (SA) held its first Relay for Life event in 2005. Since then Relay has grown and in 2008 it was held in 16 communities.

Now, in 2009, the Maritzburg College Interact Club, in conjunction with CANSA, will host the Pietermaritzburg leg of the Relay on Saturday 22 August 2009.
