Drama
TEACHER IN CHARGE: Mrs O Koch

Maritzburg College stages several Dramatic productions each year. Being involved in these productions is a very popular option for the boys who attend auditions in huge numbers. Annual productions include either: a large musical, a full school play or a musical review. With the growing interest in performance the last few years more than one production a year have been showcased. College also holds a Performing Arts Competition each year where boys can enter in the following categories: Drama (as a director or actor), dance (as a dancer or choreographer), individual items (acting) or performing musical items (songs or playing musical instruments). We also take part in the annual dance production at Hilton College, "FUNK" and the matric students are given the opportunity to direct short plays in the second term. Local girls' schools often invite the College boys to participate in their productions to play the male leads and also, the university holds open auditions for some of their plays', another opportunity for our boys to perform.
In addition to productions, College hosts professional productions from time to time and, also, the boys are afforded the opportunity of attending several outside productions during the year as well as the Standard Bank Schools Festivals in Hilton for grade 11s and in Grahamstown for grade 12s.
Experts are invited to hold workshops for the boys as well.
Boys can achieve awards for their participation in Drama productions. We have a drama club called “The College Actors Workshop” for any boy who is interested in any element of Performing Arts. There is indeed ample opportunity for any boy to get the opportunity to “tread the boards”!
