Drama at Maritzburg College
|FORTHCOMING PERFORMANCES AND PRODUCTIONS|
“Theatre is what we all do all the time in life - we’re both performing and being the audience.”
A troupe of overexcited oddball actors unite to perform Nothing On, a farce stuffed with entrances and exits, mistaken identities, sardines and slamming doors - but the drama backstage is even more entertaining than the comedy on stage.
Noises Off, one of the funniest plays ever written about the theatre, brings the actor front and center for an evening of hilarity and impeccable timing.

Maritzburg College stages several Dramatic productions each year. Being involved in these productions is a very popular option for the boys who attend auditions in huge numbers. Annual productions include either: a large musical, a full school play or a musical review. With the growing interest in performance the last few years more than one production a year have been showcased. College also holds a Performing Arts Competition each year where boys can enter in the following categories: Drama (as a director or actor), dance (as a dancer or choreographer), individual items (acting) or performing musical items (songs or playing musical instruments). We also take part in the annual dance production at Hilton College, "FUNK" and the matric students are given the opportunity to direct short plays in the second term. Local girls' schools often invite the College boys to participate in their productions to play the male leads and also, the university holds open auditions for some of their plays', another opportunity for our boys to perform.
In addition to productions, College hosts professional productions from time to time and the boys are afforded the opportunity of attending several outside productions during the year as well as the Standard Bank Schools Festivals in Hilton for grade 11s and in Grahamstown for grade 12s.
Experts are invited to hold workshops for the boys as well.
We also offer the College Actors Workshop (the cultural activity behind our film), this is a cultural activity that allows the boys to script, direct, produce and perform in theatre, that is not necessarily the school play. This year for example, we are doing College’s first film production. We have just as many boys in front of the camera as we have behind the camera. The film is being made on a very modest budget and with very modest equipment. There is a great deal of learning taking place in this society and the boys stand to benefit greatly from their involvement .
Boys can achieve awards for their participation in Drama productions. There is indeed ample opportunity for any boy to get the opportunity to “tread the boards”!
